Pirates bring home third place trophy

The Norwood Pirates brought home a third place trophy from the Class 2 State baseball tournament at O’Fallon.

The Pirates were to face West Platte in the third place contest, but the game was canceled because of rain. Tournament officials indicated that because of time constraints in fitting in the following games of the state baseball tournaments with the weather situation it was decided to cancel the game and award both teams third place.

Norwood had matched up with New Bloomfield in the previous game in O’Fallon and fell by a score of 15-2.

In the game the Pirates took an early lead when Weston Chadwell led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and Tyler Prichard moved him up with a sacrifice bunt. Chadwell would score when Joel Ogletree doubled.

New Bloomfield didn’t break on to the scoreboard until the third inning. New Bloomfield led off with a double. Dalton Rein struck out the next hitter, before another New Bloomfield hitter walked. After a fly out, two runs would come home on the second double of the inning. A third double would bring in another run. After a walk a homerun would score the final three runs of the inning and gave New Bloomfield a 6-1 lead.

New Bloomfield came back with five runs in the fourth. The first hitter would reach on an error and a double put runners at second and third. A walk would load the bases.  A single would score two runs. The Pirates would record the first out on a fielder’s choice.  A single and two Pirate errors allowed the remaining runs to score.

Norwood came back with a run in the fourth when with two outs Chadwell reached on an error and Prichard doubled him home.

New Bloomfield’s final runs scored in the fifth. New Bloomfield led off with a double and the second and third hitters of the inning reached on errors. The error and a balk allowed the first two runs of the inning score and two more doubles scored the final two runs.

Valle Catholic would later defeat New Bloomfield, 7-1, to take the championship.
