Lady Pirates third at Sparta Tournament

Norwood Lady Pirates took third place in the Sparta Tournament with a 64-52 win over the host in the third place game.

Norwood’s defense had a tough time in the first half and Sparta took a 16-15 first quarter lead and they were up 33-26 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Sparta took a 37-26 lead. Chloe Crain entered the game to start to press Sparta and the team went on a 7-0 run and cut the lead to four.  The Lady Pirates forced eight Sparta turnovers in just over five minutes of the third quarter. Norwood took the lead late in the third quarter on a three point basket by Emily Chadwell.

The Norwood defense stepped up and held Sparta to just four points until the final three and one half minutes of the period.

Chadwell with five three’s in the game and Cherokee McGraw led the Lady Pirates scoring with 22 points. McGraw had 19 of her points in the second half. She also had 11 rebounds in the game. Jenna Ogletree had 15 points and nine rebounds; Chloe Crain, 3; Madison Crain, 2.

In the opening round game of the tournament, Norwood defeated Bradleyville, 53-41.

Norwood’s inside game was to tough for Bradleyville to handle. Thirty-five of the 53 points scored were scored the McGraw and Ogletree.

Norwood was up 18-10 and held a 26-19 halftime lead.

The Lady Pirates stretched the lead to 18 points in the third quarter before Bradleyville came back to cut it down to 12.

Even with a 33 percent success rate from the free-throw Bradleyville even in the final period and hold the lead.

McGraw led the scoring with 18. Ogletree had 17; Madison Crain 12; and Emily Chadwell, 6.

The Lady Pirates fell to the tournament champion Gainesville in the second round, 48-38.

Norwood with some strong shooting and tough defense took the first quarter lead, 16-10, against the state ranked team.

The Norwood offense disappeared in the second quarter when the squad was 0 for 7 from the field and made three free-throws. The Lady Pirate defense held Gainesville to eight points in the quarter, which allowed Norwood to hang on to a one point lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Gainesville was able to tie the game after forcing six turnovers, and a 10-3 run in the final 4:37 of the quarter gave them a 33-26 third quarter lead.

In the fourth quarter, Norwood cut the lead to three points, but could not close the gap.

Ogletree led the Norwood scoring with 16. She also had 11 rebounds.

Madison Crain had 11 points, McGraw, 6; and Chloe Crain, 3; Chadwell, 2.

In a regular season game, Norwood defeated Niangua, 46-18.

The Lady Pirates held a 38-4 halftime lead.

The Norwood defense forced eight first quarter Niangua turnovers and shutout Niangua in the second period.

Chadwell led Norwood in scoring with 16. McGraw had 14; Ogletree, 7; Chloe Crain, 4; Mikayla Rogers, 3; and Emma McIntosh, 2.
