The Mountain Grove Panthers shut out the Willow Springs Bears, 47-0, for the Panthers second South Central Association win. The Panther defense held Willow Springs to just five first downs.

The Panthers took the game opening kickoff and went 72 yards on 11 plays and scored their first touchdown when Trystan Short scored a five yard run. The Panthers failed on their extra point kick attempt.

The Mountain Grove defense stopped Willow Springs on the Bear 44 and forced a punt. A punt snap went over the punters head and when the punter attempted to pick up the ball, Jamison Cain hit the punter and the Panthers took over on the Willow Springs 20.

Five plays later, Short scored his second touchdown of the game on a seven yard run. Short also scored on the two-point conversion.

Early in the second quarter, the Bears had driven to the Panther 30 when Blaine Halford intercepted a pass at the Willow Springs 15 and went 85 yards for a touchdown. Jacob Mitchell added the extra point.

On the Panthers next possession, Short scored from 25 yards out and Mitchell again added the extra point, putting the Panthers up, 28-0.

The Mountain Grove defense again forced a punt. The Bears punt from their own 25 resulted in a negative two yards and the Panthers took over on the Willow Springs 23. Two plays later, Johnny Healy carried in from the 17. Mitchell again added the extra point kick, and Mtn. Grove went into halftime with a 35-0 lead.

With the clock running because of the Panther 35 point lead, Jacob Mitchell gave the Panthers their third quarter score with a rushing touchdown. John Scanlan tallied the Panthers final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Scanlan had come in for quarterback Healy.

Healy led the Panther rushers with 87 yards on 10 carries. Short carried 10 times for 57 yards; Mitchell six for 35; Scanlan, seven for 28; Will Gourley, four for 7; and Chance Barbe, one for two yards.

Healy was 2 for 4 passing for 35 yards. Scanlan completed one of two passes for 17 yards.

Short caught one pass for 18 yards and Trey Dixson and Andy Amos each had a 17 yard catch.

The Panther junior varsity fell to Ava, 18-14, in play last week.

Carter Otwell scored in the first quarter, but the two-point conversion failed. The first quarter ended with a tie score at six.

Mountain Grove took a 12-6 lead at halftime on a score by Hayden Marah.

Ava tied the score up in the third quarter. Ava scored again in the fourth to take the lead.

In the last minute of the game, the Panthers picked up a safety to draw within four.

Junior High Play

The Panther seventh grade took a 24-0 win over Houston.

Rhett Wakefield and Nolan Young had rushing touchdowns for the Panthers and Jordan Irwin pulled in at touchdown catch.

The Panthers were successful on all their two point conversions. Shane Walters scored two of the two-point conversions.

“The offensive line played hard and did well, and the defense shut out Houston. The defense was great,” Panther Coach Tim Mumaw stated.

The Mountain Grove eighth grade won 38-8.

Trevor Thompson had two rushing touchdowns and both two point conversions were good.

Dylan Massey had a rushing touchdown. The follow up two point conversion was good.

Gavin Vaughan had a 60 yard rushing touchdown and the two point conversion was again successful.

Kole Kuster had the Panthers only receiving touchdown. The two point conversion was also successful on this score.

Houston’s only score came late in the fourth quarter with a touchdown pass and the two point conversion was also successful.

“The offensive line played well. Defense played hard. It was a great team effort,” Mumaw said.
