Panthers capture Southern Missouri Invitational Tournament Saturday

The Mountain Grove Panthers took the Southern Missouri Invitational Tournament at Dora Saturday with a 9-0 win over Plato.

Jacob Mitchell led off the first inning with a single and scored on a D.J. McNew double.

The Panthers put another run on the scoreboard in the second inning when Treye Collins walked and later came home on an Easton Collins single. Mountain Grove’s third run came in the third inning on a Hayden Newberry homerun.

McNew had a homerun in the fifth inning.

The Panthers scored their final runs in the fifth. Blaine Halford reached on an error and Easton Collins walked. With two outs McNew walked. When Brock Coffman was hit by a pitch the first run came home. Garrett Newberry singled in two more runs, and Treye Collins doubled home two more.

Mitchell took the win on the mound with six strikeouts and two hits.

Mountain Grove opened the tournament with a 10-1 win over Bakersfield.

The Panthers scored nine in the second inning with six hits including three doubles. They also had three batters hit and two walked in the inning.

Mountain Grove had single runs in the third and fourth innings. The third inning run came on a McNew homerun. The fourth inning run came home with the help of two hits, a wild pitch and an error.

Mountain Grove took South Central Association Conference wins over Ava and Houston. The Panthers defeated Ava, 7-2.

The Panthers took the lead with a run in the first when Hayden Newberry walked and scored on a Coffman double.

Mountain Grove scored five times in the third. Hayden Newberry and McNew singled. Coffman singled home a run. Garrett Newberry followed with a single and Treye Collins with an RBI double. Collins would scored the final run of the inning.

Ava put two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth.

Mountain Grove came back with a single run in the sixth when Hayden Newberry and McNew singled. Newberry would score on a Coffman sacrifice ground-out.

Moore took the win with six innings of work including 11 strikeouts. Mitchell finished the final inning.

The Panthers defeated Houston, 11-0.

Mountain Grove scored twice in the first inning and added two more in the sixth. It was a big third inning that put the game away. Easton Colllins doubled to open the inning and the Panthers followed up with six singles.

Newberry took the win for the Panthers pitching the entire game.

In a Houston Tournament makeup game for the tournament championship, the Panthers fell to Houston, 5-4.

Mountain Grove opened the game with a run in the first when McNew singled Mitchell home. Mitchell had doubled.

Houston took the lead with three in the second. Both teams scored single runs in the third.

Mountain Grove scored twice in the sixth, but Houston also scored in the inning to take the win.
