Kid Fest held Saturday in Mountain Grove

Sunday morning, August 17:  Kid Fest: Coming Together in Love 2014 holds great memories for our children and families who are waking up today.  The Kid Fest flag that flies over the festival just under the American flag has the word “Love” in the center of the heart-shaped logo.  Yesterday, in the drizzle with the possibility of more rain coming, “Faith” might have been a more appropriate word. There was no rain date, this was it. The Scriptures describe an event where children were clamoring to get to Jesus while the disciples were doing their best to shew them away.  Jesus’ response to this was “Let the children come!”  Yesterday, with the flurry of activity of canopies being set up in the slow drizzle - no one knowing what the weather was going to do - we were all saying in a gathering whisper that went all over Wright County and deep into the heart of Texas County “Let the children come”.

At ten o’clock following the flag raising ceremony by Boy Scouts Troop #50, there were only a few families waiting to enter.  The gathering whisper grew louder and as the sun gradually came out from behind the clouds, it drew the children and families.  They just kept coming and coming to the sounds of laughter and the novice carnival harkers in the booths with the encouraging words to “try again, I know you can do it”.  They kept coming to the spicy smells of hotdogs grilling, cotton candy spinning, and the grinding sounds of ice turning into refreshing syrupy snow cones.   One volunteer heard a woman on her cell phone telling a friend to “Come to Kid Fest”.  And come, they did!

The rain brought in 70 degree temps and a great breeze which made for a delightful three hours. The three hours flew quickly by as the families enjoyed the block party atmosphere.  Midway through as usual, we brought out the 30’ parachute and this year some 36” beach balls to boost high into the air with lots of children and adults powering the chute up and down.  The last hour energized us all with the new and old favorite praise selections by “One” the praise band from Houston area. We appreciate the Mountain Grove Fire Department volunteers for providing the shower of water for the closing of Kid Fest every year.

The booths that signed up after our last press release were Arvest Bank of Mountain Grove; the Girl Scouts; and Wright County Salvation Army. On behalf of the Directors of Kid Fest: Coming Together in Love, thanked the valuable volunteers who made the event possible, many from the One Accord Resource Center; the Wright County Fair board for allowing us the use of their grounds and buildings; Brian Mitchell’s Boy Scouts Troop for their patriotic spirit as they ran up the flags and led the Pledge; the City Parks Department, who once again brought in tables and waste disposal containers; to Chuck Gallagher from ProGraphics in Cabool for his help with the banners; J&S Golf Carts of Ava that donated the use of one of their carts for the event; the financial donors which included Wehr Ford, the Wright County Crisis Center, Christos House, Gracestone Community of Christ of Willow Springs and private donations.  They especially appreciate the food donations- some came with hard work: First Baptist Church of Mountain Grove who grilled and served at last count 900 hot dogs; Country Mart Mountain Grove provided the watermelons, Mountain Grove Subway, the cookies, Mountain Grove South Casey’s, the doughnuts and Cabool Shetler’s, the Carmelita Bars.  Amber Nichols from the booth “A Place Called Home” that made cotton candy said they gave away 350 quart bags full and ran out of bags.  After that, she said they just gave it to the children in their hands or as necklaces as the joyous chaos of hundreds of children mounted.  Like the rest they are planning on returning next year, but with 1,000 bags.  Amber further stated that she was amazed at the community in the booths who gave so much to provide a great festival.  A special thank you to all the providers who once again took their Saturday and created a great time for us all and of course, a special thanks to you the families of Texas and Wright Counties who came and blessed our efforts.
