Sondra Mahoney receives Life Service Award from SBU

Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar celebrated Homecoming on October 3 and 4 with events including the presentation of Life Service Awards. The award recipients included Sondra Mahoney of Mountain Grove.

The S.B.U. National Alumni Association Board nominates four prospective recipients from business, missions, church-related vocations, education and other fields of service. The Life Service awards were presented during Honors Chapel by the President of the University, is the highest recognition that the University can bestow upon an alumnus or alumna. Special breakfasts, a banquet, riding in the Homecoming Parade, and attending the football game completed the weekend.

One recipient was Dr. Herbert Pedersen. He served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Mountain Grove during 1971-72. He is married to Barbara (Holman) and they have three daughters. He has been a minister for 50 years and is adjunct professor and director of Ph.D Internship Program at Dallas Baptist University in Texas. He grew up at Hartville, and has family living there. He attended and graduated from S.B.U. in 1966.

The other recipient was Sondra (Isenburg) Mahoney, who graduated from S.B.U. in 1962. She has 30 years of service in the public school system. She worked as an elementary teacher six years in Cabool and 24 years in Mountain Grove. She has served on several community boards. Being a member of the First Baptist Church of Mountain Grove, she serves as W.M.U. Director, adult Sunday School teacher, on the Pastor Search Committee, participates in the choir, and has worked at the Associational Camp Calvary for over 40 years.

It was an honor to her to receive the award with Dr. Pedersen, who had been her pastor in 1971-72. Her sisters are Dixie Gaddis of Mountain Grove and Bonnie Kimbrough of Jonesboro, AR.

The First Baptist Church honored her with a reception on October 12.
