Mtn. Grove teachers submitting proposals to organization which matches potential donors with classroom needs

Teachers in the Mountain Grove Elementary and Middle School have submitted proposals to an online charity which helps connect potential donors with school needs. This is the first year that Mountain Grove teachers have presented proposals to DonorsChoose.org.

DonorsChoose.org vetts the proposals and if approved sets up a proposal profile which outlines the needs, materials requested and how the donations will be spent.

“We make it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need, moving us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education,” DonorsChoose.org says in its mission statement.

The organization was started in 2000 by a Bronx public high school teacher who felt there were potential donors willing to assist with classroom needs. Since its creation DonorsChoose.org has had 2,250,071 supporters of 775,525 funded projects with 19,516,439 students reached.

Donors can choose which projects they would be interested in supporting by going to the organization’s website, DonorsChoose.org and selecting proposals based on topic, teacher, school, city, state or zip code.

Mountain Grove Middle School eighth grade science instructor Jessica Schober submitted a proposal to DonorsChoose.org this summer. Since August 25 the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is doubling funds donated to her proposal.

Schober requested seven Chromebooks in her proposal, “Where Have All the Cows Gone?” In describing her project she explained that the middle school has four COWS (computer carts on wheels) which serve 400 students. This can be an issue if all core areas of all four grades are trying to use the carts of 30 Chromebooks at the same time. She explained that “having the Chromebook within the science classrooms will allow us to let the students work on projects, assignments, practice content, when our COWS are not available.”

The project will receive the materials only if it is fully funded by November 13.

The proposal has a total project goal of $1,774.44. As of August 31 the project still needed approximately $410.

Donors can check on the project’s funding progress at the website.

Mountain Grove Elementary School first grade instructor Dana Lowe has also submitted a proposal, “Firsties Are Thirsty for Some Technology!”

Lowe is seeking five Samsung-Kids Galaxy Tab E Lite, Lakeshore Magic Board, Power Pens, Subtraction Power Pen quiz cards, and Addition Power Pen quiz cards. The total project goal is $1,030. She will receive her materials for the projects only if fully funded by December 7.

She explained in the proposal that the “Hot Dots” will provide “a fun way to practice addition and subtraction facts and they get immediate feedback as to accuracy...The magic erase boards will be used in literacy and math stations.”

Mountain Grove Elementary School students are currently using materials received from a DonorsChoose.org proposal.

Elementary teacher Jaime Allen had submitted a proposal for Kindle Fire tablets and kid-sized headphones to use in a technology station in her classroom.

“Through donations from supportive parents of current and past students and their families, as well as a “match” offer from DonorsChoose.org, this project has already been funded,” Allen said.

“I started the project, “Teach, Engage, Learn! Big Learning for Little Minds” with the hope of being able to provide my students with a small group set of Kindle Fire tablets and kid-sized headphones to use in a technology station in my classroom. My primary thought was to use the Kindle tablets during guided math time, but have since expanded my thinking and plan to use them as a listening station during reading groups and many other areas as well. We have received our Kindle Fire tablets and have already begun using them for math. My students were engaged as they ‘played’ their way through math facts, counting, and number recognition without even realizing how much they are practicing and learning. They ask when math time is and cannot wait for their workstation time. These tablets are such a valuable resource for my classroom and we are so blessed to have them,” she stated.
