OZARKS FRUIT & GARDEN REVIEW: Wine premier and vineyard photography exhibit May 24

MOUNTAIN GROVE, MO – We are pleased to invite you to a premiere of our MSU wines from the 2011 vintage. If you are in the Mountain Grove area, you can be one of the first to sample our new wines. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 24 from 3-7p.m. at Faurot Hall on the Missouri State campus/State Fruit Experiment Station at Mountain Grove. Stop in any time during that period for a taste. A limited supply of wine will be on sale at the tasting.

The vineyard photographs of Joyce Beth McMurtrey will be featured at the tasting. I personally love one photo that Joyce took because she captured what working with grapes is really like. It is one with people working in the row among clothes hanging on the wire. When you begin the day in the cool of morning, you are ready to shed some sweatshirts and jackets once it warms up. We hang them on the wires and move on down the row. It was nice to see something that is so familiar look beautiful in a photo.

“My photography is honest. The vineyard pictures are my interpretation of a wonderful but complicated place to spend a lifetime,” said McMurtrey. “It’s easy to imagine that vineyard life is romantic. The flip side of all this beauty is the hard work that is required to produce grapes for making wine. In working the land comes an appreciation of life in total and a reminder of the cycles of life from birth to death.”

Our wines are a reflection of the vineyard just as the photographs are. The Mountain Grove Cellars is a commercially licensed winemaking and distillation facility located at the State Fruit Experiment Station of Missouri State University. Proceeds from our limited product sales support research conducted on specific winemaking problems, educational opportunities for Missouri State students and outreach programs for home winemakers as well as persons interested in commercial distillation of fruit brandies.

We are busy bottling the wines as well as managing the canopies in the grape vineyards here. Grape harvest and processing usually occur in August and September in Missouri. Wines then go through finishing operations and are bottled in the spring, when the new vintage can be offered.
