"The Missouri goat inventory, as of January 1, 2012, increased slightly from last year. This follows two years of small decreases," said Robert Garino, Acting Director of USDA-Missouri Agricultural Statistics Service. "Meat goats, which make up almost 90 percent of the total inventory, drove this rise."

Missouri goat inventory totaled 94,000 head on January 1, 2012, up two percent from 92,300 head on hand a year earlier. Meat goat inventory totaled 83,500 head, an increase of four percent from the 2011 level of 80,000. Milk goats, at 9,000 head, are down 2,000 head from a year earlier, while Angora goats increased by 200 head from last year to 1,500 head.
